The Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger

A few weekends ago we were all watching Cook’s Country together (yes, my 5-year-old loves to watch cooking shows. It warms my heart). They were making something called Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers and they looked mouthwateringly good.

For some reason that episode was on at least 3 or 4 more times within a two-week span and I finally told SP I had to make them. So, he picked up some ground beef at the store and I planned to make them one Saturday for dinner. Then we had a ridiculously huge lunch and couldn’t stand the thought of eating again.

The ground beef went into the freezer, where it was promptly forgotten. I finally remembered that I wanted to make the recipe and put the burgers on the menu two nights ago. They were so good I had to blog them immediately.

The Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger is a classic and flavorful dish. Here’s a recipe for you:

The Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger
Ingredients:
For the Burger Patties:
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend is recommended for juiciness)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
For the Fried Onions:
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
For Assembling the Burger:
  • Burger buns
  • Cheese slices (optional)
  • Mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, or your favorite condiments
  • Pickles, lettuce, and tomato slices (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Prepare the Fried Onions:
    • Place the thinly sliced onions in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
    • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, and pepper.
    • Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
    • Take each soaked onion slice, coat it in the flour mixture, and then fry until golden brown. Place the fried onions on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  2. Make the Burger Patties:
    • Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide it into equal portions and shape them into thin patties.
    • Press a handful of the finely chopped onions onto each patty, embedding them into the meat.
  3. Cook the Burgers:
    • Heat a griddle or skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Place the burger patties, onion side down, onto the hot surface. Cook for a few minutes until the onions begin to caramelize.
    • Flip the burgers and cook to your desired doneness. Add cheese slices if you like, allowing them to melt.
  4. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Toast the burger buns on the griddle or in the oven.
    • Spread your favorite condiments on the buns.
    • Place the cooked burger patties on the bottom half of the bun.
    • Top with the crispy fried onions.
    • Add lettuce, tomato, and pickles if desired.
    • Place the top half of the bun, and your Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are ready to enjoy!

These burgers are known for their deliciously crispy fried onions and savory flavor. Adjust the toppings and condiments to suit your taste preferences.
