Ingredients:

For the Swedish Meatballs:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the Noodle Bake:
  • 8 oz egg noodles, cooked according to package instructions
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients for the Swedish meatballs. Mix until well combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef or vegetable broth and heavy cream, making sure there are no lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens.
  7. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Add the cooked egg noodles to the skillet, tossing them in the sauce until well coated.
  9. Place the cooked meatballs on top of the noodles.
  10. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese over the meatballs and noodles.
  11. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
