Slow Cooker Honey Glazed Gammon

At this time of year, the lure of festive recipes irresistible. This Slow Cooker Honey Glazed Gammon can be enjoyed all year round, but it always tastes extra special around Christmas. It’s a perfect main course that combines the simplicity of slow cooking with the rich, indulgent taste of a sweet and tangy glazed ham.

I served this honey glazed gammon at home as a Sunday roast dinner.

It went down a treat!

Start by placing your gammon in the slow cooker, then covering (or nearly covering) it in water along with a few aromatics. I add a quartered onion, a couple of bay leaves, and some peppercorns to infuse a depth of flavour. If you only have an onion, that will do just fine.

While the ham is transforming to tender perfection, mix together honey, brown sugar, and a small amount of english mustard. This will create a glaze that’s both sweet and complex. I prefer English mustard because of its robust flavour, but it’s only in small quantity here, so the sweetness of the honey and sugar really shines through. However, you can use any other type mustard in this recipe if you prefer.

When the gammon has finished in the slow cooker, carefully transfer it to a roasting tray. With a sharp knife, score the surface, creating a diamond pattern. This will enhance its visual appeal but also allow the glaze to penetrate the meat, intensifying the flavours. If you have a large amount of fat and skin on the meat, you can pull this away and discard it if you prefer.

Next, coat the gammon generously with your honey mustard glaze, letting it seep into the scored crevices. Next, it’s time for the grand finale – place the gammon into a preheated oven set to 180°C (fan) and bake for 20-30 minutes. Watch as the glaze caramelises into a glistening coat that promises a sweet tangy flavour with every slice.

To serve

This honey glazed gammon is perfect for a Sunday roast, or a festive centerpiece. It shines with roasted potatoes or creamy mashed potato. Serve it with seasonal vegetables for a fresh side. It’s also not just for the day. It’s ideal for leftovers through the week – especially in sandwiches. I enjoyed my leftovers in sandwiches brie and cranberry – for that special Xmas time feeling!
