Cowboys played a vital role in the settlement of the western United States, engaging in tasks such as cattle drives, fence repairs, and horse care. Many cattle drives originated in Texas and concluded at the Kansas railroad.

Cattle drives demanded strenuous, hungry work. Cowboys would rise early to guide the herd to the next night’s stop, with about a dozen cowboys typically handling a herd of around 3,000 cattle. Additionally, there was a trail boss, a camp cook, and a wrangler responsible for managing the extra horses.
