Instructions:
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Step 2: Season and Form Patties
In a large bowl, combine ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Form the beef mixture into 6 even patties.
Step 3: Brown the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 2-3 minutes per side. (Optional: Use vegetable oil if needed.) The patties don’t need to be fully cooked as they’ll finish cooking in the oven.
Once browned, remove the patties and set them aside.
Step 4: Prepare the Gravy
In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining cup of milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes. (Optional: Add chicken broth to the gravy for extra richness.)
Step 5: Layer the Potatoes and Onions
In the greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes and onions. Place the browned beef patties on top, followed by the remaining potatoes and onions.
Step 6: Pour the Gravy
Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the potatoes, onions, and patties.
Step 7: Bake the Casserole
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
Step 8: Add the Cheese
After 1 hour, uncover the dish and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top. Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 9: Serve
Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy with a side of salad or steamed vegetables!
Cooking Tips:
Use a mandolin slicer for even potato slices.
Don’t overmix the beef to avoid tough patties.
Customize the cheese by using mozzarella or Gruyère for a different twist.
Storage & Reheating:
Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3-4 days.
Reheat in the oven at 350°F, covered, for 15-20 minutes or microwave individual portions for 2-3 minutes.
