Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • Ground nutmeg or cinnamon for sprinkling

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:
  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
2. Prepare Baking Dish:
  • Grease a baking dish or individual ramekins.
3. Beat Eggs:
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs well.

4. Add Sugar and Salt:

  • Add the granulated sugar and salt to the beaten eggs. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved.
5. Add Vanilla Extract:
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.
6. Heat Milk:
  • In a saucepan, heat the whole milk over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling.
  • You can scald the milk by bringing it just to the point of simmering, then remove it from heat.
7. Combine Egg Mixture and Milk:
  • Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, stirring constantly to prevent the eggs from curdling.
8. Strain Mixture (Optional):
  • For a smoother custard, you can strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into another bowl.
9. Pour into Baking Dish:
  • Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish or ramekins.
10. Bake:
  • Place the baking dish in a larger pan filled with hot water (water bath) to help the custard cook evenly.
  • Sprinkle the top of the custard with ground nutmeg or cinnamon.
11. Bake Until Set:
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the custard is set and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
12. Cool:
  • Allow the custard to cool before serving.
  • It can be served warm, at room temperature, or chilled in the refrigerator.
13. Optional: Caramel Sauce (Optional):
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce before serving for an extra indulgent treat.
