Ingredients:
For the Swedish Meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the Noodle Bake:
- 8 oz egg noodles, cooked according to package instructions
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients for the Swedish meatballs. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the beef or vegetable broth and heavy cream, making sure there are no lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens.
- Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
- Add the cooked egg noodles to the skillet, tossing them in the sauce until well coated.
- Place the cooked meatballs on top of the noodles.
- Sprinkle the shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese over the meatballs and noodles.
- Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
